Since 2000, the opioid crisis has both grown in magnitude and changed in character. As substance use shifted away from pain pills toward heroin and synthetic opioids, the crisis began to affect greater numbers of younger adults. At the same time, there was a rise in accidental overdose deaths and an increase in the number and share of deaths involving multiple substances.
This new series of interactive data visualizations depicts these evolving trends in the crisis including - for the first time - unduplicated counts of how many opioid deaths involved specific combinations of prescription opioids, heroin, and/or synthetic opioids.
All data represented in the graphics are available for download. |
