Webinar: Farm Safety for Children and Youth

Webinar from the Children's Safety Network

Farm Safety for Children and Youth:
Risks and Rewards
Thursday, March 4, 2021
3:00 - 4:00 pm EST
There are many benefits to living and working on farms and ranches, including developing a good work ethic, learning responsibility, and developing respect for the land. While farms and ranches are wonderful places for children and youth to live, work and play, they are also one of our nation’s most dangerous worksites and the only worksite where children of any age can be present. Eighty-one percent of occupational fatalities among youth 15 – 17 years old were in the agricultural/forestry/fishing and hunting sector, making agriculture the most dangerous industry for young workers in the U.S. While in non-agricultural industries, regulations and work standards indicate appropriate work for children, the standards and regulations in agriculture are different and often do not apply to the family farm.

Marsha Salzwedel of the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety will outline the risks and benefits of farm work, share evidence-based/informed prevention strategies, challenges, and resources. Amy Rademaker of Carle Hospital in Illinois, will share her experiences working with farmers and their families through the Progressive Ag Safety Day ProgramMarla Vanore of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and an active member of the Child Safety Now Alliance (CSN-A) will moderate this webinar.

Celebrate Black History Month:

The theme of Black History Month 2021 is "The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity," chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASAALH).

Here are just a few ways that you can learn about Black history, contemporary Black culture and experiences, and continue to commit yourself to antiracist action in your professional and personal life:

Find out what programs your local public library is hosting. For example, Denver Public Library will host Medicines of the Black American Captive with Community Herbalist Monticue Connally on Feb 22 and Jefferson County Public Library will host a conversation about How to Talk to Kids About Race with Janet R. Damon on February 17.

Let families know about EMBRace, a culturally-based therapeutic program that encourages African American youth ages 10-14 and their families to confront and resolve racial stress and trauma together. Participating families will meet online with a trained therapist once a week for 7 weeks with the goals of reducing racial stress, promoting family bonding, and improving psychological well-being. Families who complete the program receive a $100 gift card. Interested families should contact theembraceprogram@gmail.com for more details

Virtually attend one of ASAALH's events, including their marquee event on February 20, a conversation with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham about popularizing Black history through the heritage of African American families and their search for roots.

Read a book - or read to the children in your life. Start by checking out the Black History Picks! curated by Detroit Book City or Children's Books that Celebrate Diverse Stories curated by Anti-Racism Daily (ARD) Reads.

Get ideas for actions you can take to dismantle white supremacy by signing up for the Anti-Racism Daily newsletter.

Celebrate Black legacy in the U.S. by signing up for the 28 Days of Black History virtual exhibition.

Watch Happy Birthday, Dr. Justina Ford anytime this month to learn more about the first female African American licensed doctor in Colorado. Dr. Ford worked in Denver's Five Points community and provided medical care to everyone, regardless of race, class, or citizenship status. Dr. Ford's home now houses the Black American West Museum.

Explore the works and voices of Black artists online at the Denver Art Museum, including the art of Colorado Springs-based visual artist Senga Nengudi.

Application Deadline Extended: Botvin LifeSkills Training for Youth

The Botvin LifeSkills Training High School program is an evidence-based, 10-session program for social-emotional learning and substance abuse and violence prevention. The program also has evidence showing it improves driving behavior and road safety among young people.

The University of Colorado Boulder is offering a grant to Colorado schools to implement this program to students in grade 9. Selected schools will implement the program in either Fall 2021 or Fall 2023.

The application deadline has been extended to March 10, 2021. Click here for more information about this funding opportunity and to access the online application. You may contact Diane Ballard, the grant manager, with additional questions at diane.ballard@colorado.edu or (303) 735-4164.

With the surge in youth vaping rates, and COVID-19 slashing budgets and requiring creative coping strategies, this opportunity can provide much needed support during these stressful times. The grant will cover instructor training workshops, stipends or substitute-teacher reimbursement for trainings, teacher manuals, and consumable student guides. Optional online instructional resources are also available.

FREE Virtual Car Seat Checks - Feb 13

You would do anything to protect the little loves in your life.  Make sure their car seats are used and installed right when you meet virtually with a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) during a FREE National event on February 13th! Sign up here: bit.ly/39pbYOH for a virtual car seat assistance appointment.

The event is free, but caregiver registration is required. With many services still suspended due to COVID-19, or perhaps cancelled with the winter months, this is a great option for caregivers.  The virtual checks are conducted one-on-one between the caregiver and CPST.  Each appointment typically runs about 45-50 minutes and during that time, the CPST will review the seat selection, harnessing, how to adjust for growth, and then review the caregivers installation.

DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) Regional CPS (Child Passenger Safety) Network is sponsoring this national virtual car seat check event.
